Best rates for US ATM cards used abroad? Credit cards?

My US bank charges $5 per transaction plus an exchange fee of 3%. Does any US bank do better than that?

Do you get a better exchange rate on US Dollars to Euro at any particular place?

You shouldn%26#039;t be charged the $5 overseas. Ask your bank. My credit union doesn%26#039;t charge me. You will have to check the exchange rate at each place to get the most for your money. It will vary day to day and some banks or exchanges give better rates. But this is important. Using your card, your bank should give you the best rate. Change a little at the airport till you can get to an exchange. Airports give the lowest rate, so don%26#039;t change a lot. Just keep your eye on local banks and exchanges. They usual post the exchange rates. Enjoy your trip. I%26#039;m in Pattaya, Thailand. One more thing. Carry some money because sometimes they charge extra for a foreign card. If they do you%26#039;ll lose more than just out right using an atm or cash.

Possible not. However, there may be away around the $5.00 but you will still get the 3% fee.

Call your bank and let them know you will be using your card in Europe. So, it has a less chance of being blocked. Take your banks phone number in case you need to call them.

You should be able to use your debit/atm card that has a Visa or MasterCard logo anywhere those cards are accepted. You will need to take your ID and passport with you. The reason is Europe has chip %26amp; pin. You will need to tell the merchant in advance that you will have to sign for your purchase, tell them your country has not upgrade to chip and pin. However, some cards may work as a pin transaction if the merchant takes Plus (aka Visa plus) or Maestro and your card has that logo.
